Big Pix™

During the process of game development it is typical to render scenes in a 3D art package (in this case, PowerAnimator) in order to preview how something might look in the game.  These images were created by me during that process.

These are designed to be Windows wallpaper at various sizes, mostly at 1280x1024 - although a few have been left at 1024x768 or 1600x1200 resolution.  They are large enough that you can enable Windows 98 "stretch" mode and they’ll work on just about any desktop.

  1. Icy Cavern from C.I.N.D.-E 1.4
This shot was used to test advanced bump mapping and texture generation with DX7 lighting.  The scene is rich in detail but low in polycount due to advanced pixel effects.

  2. Nebulon Emerges
This shot is an expanded frame from the MPEG-1 clip on the download page. Everyone thinks that it's a picture of the asteroid getting sucked into the black hole, but if you've seen the clip you know that it's emerging.
  3. Nebulon in Orbit
Another frame from my sequence showing Nebulon emerging from the black hole - here, it's already emerged and it's orbiting.

  4. CyberDome Title Background
The title screen background bitmap from CyberDome was originally rendered at 1280x1024. Here it is in its original high-res glory.  (The name of the game and other text was generated at runtime from polygons.)

  5. Sun City
This is a concept from a game under development called Solar Flair. This one has been pretty popular. The geometry is almost trivial - the effect comes from the lighting and the textures.

  6. Viking Room
This one took 36 hours to render because of all the lights. The original geometry was commissioned by Guy Johnson for a game concept of his and created by Jennifer Terry. I redid the textures and added tons of lighting. I also cheated and fixed some of the candle flames in Photoshop. (Hey, if ILM can touch up frames in Photoshop, so can I.)
