Cind-E - a Synthetic Actress |
Cind-E, your computer AI WSO (Weapon Systems Officer), is a synthetic actress under development in Alias Power Animator (tm) and Alias StudioPaint 3D. |
The basic geometry of Cind-E is an inexpensive model of a woman's head from Viewpoint Datalabs. The model consists of 989 polygons and 761 vertices, which is very small by modern standards. (The original Viewpoint model was actually a bit smaller, but additional polygons were trivially added to increase the flexibility of the model for animation.) |
Next, I applied skin and makeup using StudioPaint 3D™ from Alias / Wavefront. |
Finally, hair was grown using a particle system simulation in Alias Power Animator. The hair moves as Cind-E moves and provides for a great deal of realism. (It's also a major pain-in-the-ass to create and animate.) |
The vast majority of professional character animation you'll see in movies or on television makes use of NURBS models - high-degree geometry that is very flexible. It is a breakthrough to bring the same kind of animation to life using a small polygonal model. |
CindE's internal skeletal structure was built using a new process I developed called SuperSkel™; a SuperSkel skeletal structure is a special kind of skeleton that speeds up the animation of complex 3D objects without sacrificing movement of skin and/or muscles. |
I recently switched CindE to have short hair rather than long hair to "toughen up" her look a bit. (But since she's synthetic I suspect she could grow it back out at a moment's notice.) |
